Undoubtedly you’ve come across the WinSxS folder in Windows and wondered if it’s possible to reclaim the space used.  It is possible.

As of Windows 7 SP1 & Windows Server 2008 R2 scavenging will attempt to reclaim space in the WinSxS folder automatically.  Don’t be shocked if you reclaim 0 bytes running the commands below.

Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008

DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /SpSuperseded

Windows 8 / Windows 8.1 / Windows Server 2012 R2

Immediately remove previous versions of updated components with no grace period or timeout

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Remove all superseded versions of every component.  All existing service packs and updates cannot be removed after running this.

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
